Of heroes and frailities [Nov. 21st, 2003|10:12 am]
“Where are all the good men gone and where are all the Gods…” – Bonnie Tyler, ‘We Need a Hero’.
Michael Jackson is in the news again, and again it is for all the wrong reasons.
In an age when the media is so prevalent and news travels as fast as the bandwidth will allow it to, it has become increasingly difficult for heroes to stay on their pedestals. Every move of theirs is noted, studied and written about, giving them very little chance to err. Added to this we have PR managers who can make stars out of virtually anybody, irrespective of whether they have actually done anything or not. In fact it is easier if the ‘star’ has done nothing and only shown promise. At least that way his performance won’t be the key anymore.
The list of fallen stars can go on and on and on. Diego Maradona, looking every inch of anything but the lean football player that numerous photographs had glorified celebrated his birthday last week in China of all places. Indian cricket team aspirants are ready to bribe the selectors to put them on teams. Shane Warne, the Australian cricketer has been pulled up for everything from betting to eve-teasing. Liverpool FC was hit by the fixing scandal and has left the club in shambles.
Is Michael at fault? I don’t know, I’d like to think he’s innocent. I’m one of those softies who likes to give his heroes a chance. I firmly believe in the creed that a man is innocent until proven guilty. Plus, Michael has given me just too many wonderful memories.
I happened to watch the Michael Jackson interview on BBC and came away thinking that Michael had been short changed. He would say things like, “Yes, I sleep with children.” He meant he would lie on the same bed as them, but it would be construed as he would have sex with them. Words out of context are the worst enemy of a man.
But if, IF, Michael is guilty I hope he gets the maximum of what the law prescribes and then some more. Any one who has hurt a child deserves no sympathy. I can’t think of many more crimes that would fall lower than this one in any list. Child molestation is a CRIME that can be committed by only the most filthiest of people.
But in my heart of hearts I wish and pray that Michael is innocent. I don’t know how many more fallen heroes I can take.
